Hypertension is a major public health concern globally, contributing significantly to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In Nigeria, the prevalence of hypertension continues to rise, with many patients struggling with treatment adherence. Poor adherence to antihypertensive treatment is a major barrier to effective blood pressure control, leading to complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.
Patient-centered nursing care (PCNC) emphasizes individualized care that considers patients’ preferences, values, and needs. This approach fosters better patient engagement, improves communication, and enhances trust between nurses and patients. Studies have suggested that when hypertensive patients receive personalized nursing interventions, they are more likely to adhere to prescribed medications, lifestyle modifications, and follow-up appointments.
Despite the recognized benefits of PCNC, its implementation in Nigeria remains inconsistent due to factors such as high patient-to-nurse ratios, inadequate training, and limited resources. Understanding the impact of PCNC on treatment adherence among hypertensive patients in Bayelsa State is crucial for improving hypertension management and reducing complications associated with poor adherence.
Hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease-related deaths in Nigeria, yet adherence to treatment remains a challenge. Many patients fail to follow prescribed medication regimens, lifestyle modifications, and routine check-ups, leading to poorly controlled blood pressure.
While patient-centered nursing care has been shown to improve treatment adherence in some healthcare settings, its effectiveness in Bayelsa State is yet to be adequately explored. Factors such as patient education, shared decision-making, and nurse-patient relationships could play significant roles in determining adherence levels. Investigating this issue will provide valuable insights for enhancing nursing care strategies to improve health outcomes in hypertensive patients.
This study will focus on hypertensive patients receiving care in healthcare facilities across Bayelsa State. It will evaluate the effectiveness of patient-centered nursing care in improving adherence to medication, lifestyle changes, and follow-up visits. Limitations may include variability in patient responses to nursing interventions and differences in healthcare facility resources.
